ABOUT

Salmo & Area Supportive Housing Society

In 1997 a group of community minded citizens got together to address the needs of seniors in our community. The goal was to provide a good option for seniors who didn’t want to worry about home maintenance, meals, and whom could choose independent living. This would enable them to enjoy amenities and activities available, and feel confident knowing that help is there if they needed it. Most importantly they would be able to stay in the community during their senior years. On November 4, 2002 the group became the Salmo and Area Supportive Housing Society, with membership and support from the Village of Salmo, many community organizations and members of the community at large. The first challenge was to meet government requirements, which meant the completion of surveys and proving a needs assessment of the community. Secondly was to find and purchase land conveniently located near a wide range of helpful community services. With strong support from community many years of fundraising began. Monthly bake sales, hamburger and hot dog sales, and raffles were held. Large events as dinner and dances, auction sales, talent shows, were fun and very successful. Most notable was the developing of Salmo Seniors cook book. After many years of various fund raising we were able to find a suitable site and affordable way to purchase the land. October 10, 2013 we held a large ground-breaking event with over 150 community members, Government Officials, BC Housing and Columbia Basin Trust in attendance. On November 1, 2014 we saw our first residents move in.
